    Job Description
    Performs administrative and highly managerial work directing the Building Department, municipal building inspection and enforcement of construction codes. Incumbent must be a strong leader with outstanding communication and listening skills. Understands the importance of quality human relations with staff and is able to create an environment that engenders staff retention and teamwork. Will need to be hands-on as necessary. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.  Performs and causes to be performed all building, electrical and plumbing inspections.  Researches, formulates and drafts new and amended codes and ordinances related to building inspection and construction codes, coordinates initiation and implementation of such codes and ordinances with the City Attorney’s Office. Maintains awareness of changes and trends in the building inspection programs; prepares and presents oral and written reports.  Examines, approves or rejects plans, specifications and applications for building permits. Gives reasons for rejections. Verifies contractor qualifications.  Makes or directs inspections of major buildings or structures as to foundation, framing and for conformity to conditions of the permit.  Examines all applications for electrical permits, inspects wiring when necessary. Prepares reports on inspections and investigations.  Consults with the general public, departmental officials, contractors, building owners and associates.  Enforces construction related ordinances established by the City.  Conducts weekly job site visits.  Answers phone calls and emails.
